The villainous Nekron and his mother, Queen Juliana, plot against the human race from their frigid fortress. Creating mass destruction with huge glaciers, mother and son incur the wrath of Larn, a warrior whose entire village was destroyed by ice. When Nekron's underlings kidnap the beautiful Princess Teegra, Larn sets out to rescue her, assisted by the fierce and enigmatic Darkwolf.
Ralph Bakshi and Frank Frazetta's rotoscoped fantasy is visually distinctive, blending Frazetta's iconic sword-and-sorcery aesthetic with fluid animated movement that gives it a unique place in adult animation history. The cinematography and character design carry the film — muscular figures, dramatic lighting, and sweeping icy landscapes reflect Frazetta's unmistakable style. However, the plot is thin even by pulp fantasy standards: a straightforward rescue quest with underdeveloped characters and minimal dramatic stakes. The voice performances are serviceable but unremarkable. The ending resolves quickly and without much emotional payoff. Novelty is elevated by the Bakshi-Frazetta collaboration and rotoscoping technique, which remains a singular artifact of its era, though the story itself is pure genre formula.
