The Pagemaster (1994)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

Rich knows a lot about accidents. So much so, he is scared to do anything that might endanger him, like riding his bike, or climbing into his treehouse. While in an old library, he is mystically transported into the unknown world of books, and he has to try and get home again.

The Quartile Take

The Pagemaster is a live-action/animation hybrid with a charming concept — a fearful boy transported into a world of classic literature — but its execution falls short in several areas. The plot is thin and episodic, moving through genre-book set pieces (Horror, Adventure, Fantasy) without much depth or emotional resonance. The voice acting from established talent (Patrick Stewart, Whoopi Goldberg, Frank Welker) is serviceable but not particularly memorable, and Macaulay Culkin's live-action performance is functional at best. The animation is competent and occasionally visually inventive, blending stylized literary worlds in a way that gives the film some visual personality, though it doesn't reach the heights of contemporaneous Disney or Don Bluth work. The concept of bringing classic literature to life for children gives it some novelty, particularly as a live-action/animation hybrid, though the execution is fairly conventional. The ending resolves predictably with Rich overcoming his fears, offering little surprise or emotional payoff.
