On the day of his retirement, a veteran CIA agent learns that his former protégé has been arrested in China, is sentenced to die the next morning in Beijing, and that the CIA is considering letting that happen to avoid an international scandal.
Spy Game is a slick, well-crafted thriller elevated primarily by the charismatic pairing of Robert Redford and Brad Pitt. Redford in particular delivers a measured, authoritative performance that anchors the film. The plot is competent — the dual timeline structure (present-day ticking clock vs. flashback mentorship) is engaging but not without conveniences and contrivances. Cinematography by Jamie Anderson is functional and period-appropriate across its globe-trotting locales, though Tony Scott's signature style is slightly more restrained here than in his flashier work. Novelty is moderate — the mentor-protégé CIA dynamic and Cold War moral ambiguity are familiar territory, but the film handles them with enough intelligence to rise above generic thriller fare. The ending delivers a satisfying payoff that rewards patience without being truly surprising.
