Young Haru rescues a cat from being run over, but soon learns it's no ordinary feline; it happens to be the Prince of the Cats.
The Cat Returns is a charming, lightweight entry in Studio Ghibli's catalog — a loose spin-off from Whisper of the Heart. The plot is whimsical and moves briskly but remains fairly thin, relying on familiar fairy-tale logic without much depth or consequence. The voice acting (both Japanese and English dubs) is competent and warm, though no performance stands out as exceptional. The animation is polished Ghibli craft with inventive cat-world design, but lacks the visual ambition of Miyazaki's own films — it feels more like an extended short than a feature. Novelty is moderate: the anthropomorphic cat kingdom is fun and the Baron is a delightful character, but the self-discovery premise and portal-fantasy structure are well-worn. The ending resolves quickly and neatly without much earned emotional resonance, feeling somewhat abrupt and low-stakes for a climax.
