The Quartile Take

Transcendence squanders an intriguing transhumanism premise with a muddled, tonally inconsistent script that never convincingly explores its own ideas. The plot devolves into generic thriller territory, failing to meaningfully engage with the philosophical questions it raises. The cast — Depp, Hall, Freeman, Cillian Murphy — performs adequately but is hamstrung by underwritten roles, with Depp especially flat as the uploaded consciousness. Wally Pfister's cinematography is polished and competent given his pedigree, but lacks the visual ambition the subject matter demands. The film treads familiar AI-gone-wrong ground without a distinctive voice or fresh angle, feeling derivative of better technophobia narratives. The ending attempts emotional resonance but lands as anticlimactic and unsatisfying, failing to pay off either the thriller mechanics or the romantic throughline.
