Godzilla: Final Wars (2004)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

Humanity finally rids themselves of Godzilla, imprisoning him in an icy tomb in the South Pole. All is peaceful until various monsters emerge to lay waste to Earth's cities. Overwhelmed, humanity is seemingly saved by a race of benevolent aliens known as Xiliens. But not all is what it seems with these bizarre visitors. If humanity wishes to survive, they must reluctantly resurrect their most hated enemy, Godzilla.

The Quartile Take

Godzilla: Final Wars is a deliberately maximalist, kitchen-sink entry in the franchise — director Ryuhei Kitamura cranks up the action to absurd levels, packing in nearly every classic Toho kaiju in rapid-fire succession. The plot is serviceable pulp sci-fi, hitting familiar beats (alien invasion, humanity vs. Godzilla) without much depth, and the acting is campy at best, ranging from wooden to over-the-top in ways that feel unintentional. Cinematography is energetic with flashy fight choreography and stylized editing that suits the bombastic tone. The novelty comes from its sheer audacity — essentially a 50th-anniversary celebration that functions as a Greatest Hits album at turbo speed — though it doesn't reinvent the genre so much as amplify it. The ending delivers satisfying monster brawls and a conclusive note for the Millennium series, though it's more crowd-pleasing spectacle than emotionally resonant closure.
