Trekkies (1997)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

Denise Crosby takes a first look at the huge fans of "Star Trek" from around America and how the series has affected and shaped their lives.

The Quartile Take

Trekkies is a cheerful, affectionate documentary portrait of Star Trek superfans that works best as a curio of 1990s fan culture. Its novelty lies in being an early, dedicated deep-dive into the phenomenon of media fandom before such coverage was mainstream, and Denise Crosby's insider status gives it a warm, non-condescending tone. However, the film is episodic and lacks a strong narrative throughline, essentially a series of fan profiles without much analytical depth or structural cohesion. Cinematography is functional documentary work with no particular visual ambition. The ending simply trails off without a satisfying conclusion. Acting is not really applicable in a meaningful sense, rated as subject performance/presenter work which is amiable but unremarkable.
