In this animated retelling of the story from the Bible's Book of Genesis, Joseph's gift of dream interpretation and his brilliantly colored coat inspires jealousy in his brothers.
Joseph: King of Dreams is a direct-to-video DreamWorks animated musical that competently retells the biblical story with reasonable fidelity and emotional beats. The plot follows the well-known Genesis narrative faithfully, giving it a solid but unoriginal story structure. The voice acting is serviceable but lacks the star power and depth of theatrical releases. The animation is noticeably below theatrical standards for its era, with limited backgrounds and inconsistent character movement reflecting its made-for-video budget. As a companion piece to The Prince of Egypt it carries some of that film's visual DNA but at a reduced scale. The ending resolves emotionally but feels rushed given the epic scope of Joseph's story. Its novelty lies in being a sincere, faith-based animated musical adaptation of a less-commonly-animated Bible story, though it clearly operates in the shadow of The Prince of Egypt.
