Speed (1994)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

Tensions run high when a crazed bomber rigs a Los Angeles bus with a device that will kill everyone on board if the vehicle's speed dips below fifty miles per hour.

The Quartile Take

Speed is a masterclass in high-concept thriller execution — the 'bomb on a bus' premise is brilliantly simple and relentlessly sustained, earning genuine Novelty points for how singular and perfectly calibrated its central conceit is. The plot is tight within its narrow lane but doesn't reach beyond its hook. Acting is solid and charismatic (Reeves, Bullock, Hopper) without being remarkable. Cinematography is competent blockbuster work, kinetic and functional but not visually distinctive. The ending deflates somewhat after the bus sequence concludes — the subway finale feels rushed and less ingenious than what preceded it.
