Barbie Presents: Thumbelina (2009)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

Meet a tiny girl named Thumbelina who lives in harmony with nature in the magical world of the Twillerbees that's hidden among the wildflowers. At the whim of a spoiled young girl named Makena, Thumbelina and her two friends have their patch of wildflowers uprooted and are transported to a lavish apartment in the city.

The Quartile Take

A fairly standard direct-to-video Barbie adaptation of a classic fairy tale, Thumbelina gets a modern eco-friendly twist but remains formulaic. The animation is competent but unremarkable for its era of Barbie releases, and the voice acting is serviceable without standing out. The environmental messaging feels tacked on rather than organically woven into the story. The ending resolves predictably with little surprise. Novelty is limited — it follows the well-worn Barbie DTV template closely, and the Thumbelina source material has been adapted many times before. Solidly average across all categories for its target audience.
