The boyfriend of an abducted woman never gives up the search as the abductor looks on.
The 1993 American remake of the Dutch thriller 'Spoorloos' is widely considered a significant step down from the original. The plot largely follows the same structure but dilutes the psychological tension with Hollywood conventions. Acting is serviceable with Kiefer Sutherland and Jeff Bridges, with Bridges bringing some menace to the antagonist. The cinematography is competent but unremarkable. The most controversial change is the ending, which trades the original's devastating conclusion for a more conventional horror climax — while inferior to the original, it provides a different kind of closure that works on its own genre terms. As a remake of a celebrated foreign film, novelty is inherently limited, and the film fails to add distinctive vision of its own.
