Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Capt. Jack Sparrow feels the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost sailors led by his old nemesis, the evil Capt. Salazar, escape from the Devil's Triangle. Jack's only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, but to find it, he must forge an uneasy alliance with a brilliant and beautiful astronomer and a headstrong young man in the British navy.
Dead Men Tell No Tales is a largely formulaic fifth entry in the franchise that recycles familiar beats — cursed antagonist, magical MacGuffin, Jack Sparrow bumbling through set pieces — without adding meaningful new dimensions. The plot is thin and overcrowded with underdeveloped characters, and the new leads (Henry and Carina) are serviceable but lack chemistry and depth. Javier Bardem's Salazar is visually striking but underwritten compared to prior villains like Davy Jones. The cinematography delivers competent blockbuster visuals and some inventive ghost-ship imagery, but rarely rises to the level of the better entries. The ending attempts emotional resonance with Will Turner's return but feels rushed and unearned. Overall a below-average entry that coasts on franchise familiarity.
