In a world plagued by demons who cause great human suffering, young demon hunter Tang Sanzang must fight against monstrous demons, as well as contend with a beautiful demon hunting woman on his path to enlightenment.
Stephen Chow's irreverent reimagining of the Journey to the West mythology is genuinely distinctive — blending absurdist comedy, grotesque horror, and unexpected emotional sincerity in a way that feels wholly his own. The film's conception of Tang Sanzang as a bumbling idealist who fights demons with nursery rhymes is inspired and singular. However, the narrative structure is episodic and uneven, with the tonal lurches occasionally feeling chaotic rather than controlled. The acting is broadly cartoonish, which suits the style but limits dramatic investment. The final act rushes its resolution and the romantic subplot is not fully earned, leaving the ending feeling abrupt. Cinematography has energetic visual flair but relies heavily on CGI that has dated poorly.
