An agoraphobic psychologist and a female detective must work together to take down a serial killer who copies serial killers from the past.
Copycat is a solid mid-90s serial killer thriller elevated by two strong female leads (Sigourney Weaver and Holly Hunter) and a genuinely clever premise — a killer who mimics famous serial killers, exploiting the expert who studied them. The agoraphobia subplot adds psychological texture. However, the film follows the genre's procedural conventions fairly closely, and the ending resolves in a somewhat by-the-numbers confrontation that undercuts the tension built throughout. Cinematography is competent but unremarkable. Acting is the standout, with Weaver delivering a nuanced, vulnerable performance. A well-crafted thriller that doesn't quite transcend its genre.
