Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

Fourteen year old Nim, more determined than ever to protect her island and all the wildlife that call it home, faces off against resort developers and animal poachers. Soon she realizes she can’t depend on her animal cohorts alone and must make her first human friend – Edmund, who’s run away to the island from the mainland – to save her home.

The Quartile Take

Return to Nim's Island is a serviceable but unremarkable family sequel. The plot retreads familiar territory—plucky kid defends island from greedy developers and poachers—with little originality or narrative tension. Acting is adequate for a family production but lacks standout performances, with the cast delivering competent but forgettable work. Cinematography benefits from attractive island scenery and outdoor locations, elevating it slightly above the other categories. Novelty is low; the film is a formulaic sequel that recycles the premise of the original without adding meaningful new ideas. The ending resolves predictably with little emotional payoff, consistent with by-the-numbers family fare.
