Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating
Two turkeys from opposite sides of the tracks must put aside their differences and team up to travel back in time to change the course of history—and get turkey off the holiday menu for good.
Free Birds is a middling animated family comedy with a mildly clever premise — turkeys time-traveling to remove themselves from the Thanksgiving menu — but it fails to execute on that potential. The plot is formulaic and predictable, borrowing heavily from buddy-comedy and fish-out-of-water conventions without much wit or depth. The voice acting is serviceable but unremarkable, with Owen Wilson and Woody Harrelson delivering competent but uninspired performances. The animation is technically adequate but lacks the visual artistry or distinctive style of top-tier animated films. The time-travel concept lends some novelty to the Thanksgiving premise, making it stand out slightly from generic holiday fare, though it's squandered by lazy writing. The ending wraps up too neatly and predictably, offering little emotional payoff. Overall, it's a passable but forgettable entry in the animated family genre.
