Ruby Red (2013)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

On her 16th birthday, Gwendolyn Shepherd finds out that instead of her cousin, she has inherited a rare gene that allows her to travel through time.

The Quartile Take

Ruby Red is a competent YA fantasy adaptation of Kerstin Gier's novel, offering an enjoyable time-travel romance with a likeable lead. The plot is engaging enough for its target audience but relies on well-worn chosen-one and teenage romance tropes. The acting is serviceable, with Maria Ehrich carrying the film adequately. Cinematography is polished but unremarkable for its genre. The concept of inherited time-travel genes has some charm but the execution follows familiar YA fantasy conventions closely. The ending is deliberately incomplete, functioning more as a setup for sequels than a satisfying standalone conclusion, which weakens its impact.
