Jaws 3-D (1983)

Quartile rating: 4.5/10 · 1 rating

A giant thirty-five-foot shark becomes trapped in a SeaWorld theme park and it's up to the sons of police chief Brody to rescue everyone.

The Quartile Take

Jaws 3-D is widely considered one of the weakest entries in the franchise. The plot is thin and poorly constructed, relying on a gimmicky 3-D conceit rather than genuine tension or logic. The acting is serviceable at best, with Dennis Quaid and Bess Armstrong delivering forgettable performances. The cinematography suffers badly from the limitations of the 3-D format, resulting in awkward slow-motion shots of debris flying at the camera that look embarrassing even by 1983 standards. While the SeaWorld setting offers a marginally fresh backdrop compared to Amity Island, the film is otherwise formulaic and derivative of the original. The ending is particularly poor, featuring notoriously cheap special effects for the shark's demise that undercut any remaining tension.
