Rogue Nation is a slick, well-executed entry in the MI franchise with strong set-pieces—the Vienna Opera House sequence and the underwater vault scene are highlights—but it largely recycles the series' established formula. Rebecca Ferguson's Ilsa Faust is a genuine standout, elevating the acting above the franchise norm, but the ensemble otherwise performs at a solid rather than exceptional level. Cinematography is competent blockbuster work with some atmospheric location photography but nothing especially distinctive. The plot is engaging spy-thriller fare with satisfying twists though it doesn't reinvent the wheel, and the ending resolves cleanly if without great surprise. Novelty suffers as this is a fairly by-the-numbers sequel that refines rather than reimagines.
