While trying to prove to her family she can be mature and responsible, teen wizard Alex Russo conjures up a spell to rid herself of her bad qualities, unintentionally creating a Good and Evil Alex. When Evil Alex gets involved in a plan to take over the world by a dark wizard, Good Alex must find a way to save her family, humankind, and ultimately herself in an epic Good vs. Evil battle.
A Wizards of Waverly Place TV special that delivers a fun good-vs-evil duality premise for fans of the series, with Selena Gomez getting to play dual roles which adds some novelty within the franchise context. However, the plot is fairly formulaic for the genre, the cinematography is standard TV-movie fare with limited visual ambition, and the novelty is constrained by its derivative nature as a spinoff special. Acting is solid for the target demographic, and the ending wraps things up satisfyingly for fans. The above-average TMDB score reflects strong fan affection rather than exceptional craft across the board.
