The Beautician and the Beast (1997)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

A New York City beautician is mistakenly hired as the school teacher for the children of the president of a small Eastern European country.

The Quartile Take

A light romantic comedy riffing on Beauty and the Beast with a fish-out-of-water twist — a New York beautician navigating a Eastern European dictatorship has some charm and culture-clash novelty, but the plot is formulaic and predictable, hitting every expected beat of the opposites-attract romance. Fran Drescher's comedic persona carries the film and elevates the acting above the material, but the cinematography is serviceable at best with no distinctive visual style. The ending resolves neatly and unsurprisingly, offering little beyond genre comfort.
