The Interpreter (2005)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

After Silvia Broome, an interpreter at United Nations headquarters, overhears plans of an assassination, an American Secret Service agent is sent to investigate.

The Quartile Take

The Interpreter is a competent UN-set thriller elevated by its location shooting inside the actual United Nations building and the pairing of Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn. The plot is serviceable but convoluted in its African political backstory, and the mystery unravels in a somewhat unsatisfying way. Both leads deliver credible performances though neither is stretched particularly far. The cinematography benefits from the distinctive UN interiors and Sydney Pollack's steady professional hand, but rarely rises to anything visually striking. The concept of an interpreter as witness is a reasonable hook but the execution follows familiar thriller conventions. The ending deflates rather than satisfies, resolving the central conflict in a way that feels anticlimactic given the buildup.
