Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating
Set in Stalin-era Soviet Union, a disgraced MGB agent is dispatched to investigate a series of child murders -- a case that begins to connect with the very top of party leadership.
Child 44 has an intriguing premise rooted in a real Soviet-era serial killer case (Chikatilo) transplanted into a Stalinist political thriller framework, giving it a distinctive historical texture. However, the film struggles to balance its political commentary with its crime thriller mechanics, resulting in a muddled narrative. The acting from Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace is committed but the material lets them down. The cinematography capably evokes Cold War bleakness but without exceptional distinction. The ending feels rushed and unsatisfying, failing to pay off the film's considerable setup with appropriate dramatic weight.
