Night of the Comet (1984)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

After a comet wipes out most of life on Earth, two Valley Girls find themselves fighting against cannibal zombies and a sinister group of scientists.

The Quartile Take

Night of the Comet is a genuinely singular cult artifact — a post-apocalyptic horror-comedy filtered through a Valley Girl lens, blending 80s teen pop culture with end-of-the-world stakes in a way no other film quite replicates. The concept and tone are distinctively its own, earning high Novelty. The plot is fun but thin, relying on episodic encounters rather than tight structure. Acting is serviceable but uneven, with charismatic leads and stilted support. Cinematography captures the eerily empty Los Angeles streets effectively on a low budget, doing more with less. The ending, however, fumbles — resolving too conveniently and losing the anarchic energy that made the earlier acts charming.
