Flamboyantly gay Austrian television reporter Bruno stirs up trouble with unsuspecting guests and large crowds through brutally frank interviews and painfully hilarious public displays of homosexuality.
Brüno follows the Borat mockumentary template closely, substituting a flamboyant gay Austrian fashionista for the Kazakh reporter. The shock-comedy pranks land unevenly — some genuinely expose homophobia and celebrity absurdity, but many feel gratuitous rather than pointed. Cohen's committed physical performance keeps things energetic, but the supporting cast is largely real-world dupes rather than actors. Cinematography is functional handheld mockumentary fare with no distinctive visual ambition. Novelty is moderate — it's a recognizable formula with a different character skin, though Cohen's specific creation of Brüno has its own campy energy. The ending, a staged arena brawl segueing into a musical number, feels forced and deflated rather than a satisfying satirical climax.
