The story of the life and career of eccentric avant-garde comedian, Andy Kaufman.
Jim Carrey's transformative performance as Andy Kaufman is the film's centerpiece — a genuinely astonishing piece of method acting that earned widespread acclaim. Novelty scores high because the subject himself was so singular and the film mirrors Kaufman's own meta-theatrical sensibility, blurring performance and reality in ways few biopics attempt. The plot follows a relatively conventional biopic structure despite its unconventional subject, and the cinematography is functional rather than distinctive. The ending, while emotionally resonant, doesn't quite deliver the gut-punch the remarkable life deserved.
