In the beautiful area of Paris, Maria and José Ribeiro lived for almost thirty years on the ground floor of a Haussmann building, in their dear little lodge.
The Gilded Cage is a warm French-Portuguese comedy about immigrant life in Paris, centered on a couple torn between staying in France and returning to Portugal after an unexpected inheritance. The film benefits from charming performances and a relatable premise exploring cultural identity and belonging, but the plot follows fairly predictable comedic beats without much surprise. Cinematography is competent and makes pleasant use of Parisian settings without being particularly distinctive. The film's novelty is limited by its fairly conventional ensemble comedy structure, though its specific Portuguese-immigrant perspective gives it some cultural flavor. The ending resolves things agreeably if somewhat neatly.
