Making 'The Shining' (1980)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

Directed and edited by Stanley Kubrick's daughter Vivian Kubrick, this film offers a look behind the scenes during the making of The Shining.

The Quartile Take

A rare, intimate behind-the-scenes document of one of cinema's most enigmatic directors at work, shot by his own daughter during production of The Shining. Its novelty is exceptional — unprecedented access to Kubrick's process, capturing his methods, temperament, and interactions with Nicholson and Duvall in ways no other making-of achieves. The cinematography is competent and observational but constrained by the documentary format. Acting scores reflect the candid, unscripted nature of the subjects rather than performance craft. As a behind-the-scenes piece it lacks conventional narrative structure, making the plot minimal and the ending somewhat abrupt with little resolution. Still a singular artifact for cinephiles.
