The Quartile Take

Scorsese's documentary on Dylan's early career is a landmark of the music documentary form. The archival footage is extraordinary, the narrative arc compelling, and Dylan himself is a fascinatingly elusive subject who defies easy categorization. The film captures a singular cultural moment with rare intimacy and intelligence. Acting is not strictly applicable but interview subjects and Dylan himself are compelling on screen. Cinematography is limited by archival constraints but Scorsese uses the material masterfully. The ending, covering the 1966 motorcycle accident and retreat, is somewhat abrupt though historically apt.
