Blind Fury (1989)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

A blind Vietnam vet, trained as a swordfighter, comes to America and helps to rescue the son of a fellow soldier.

The Quartile Take

Blind Fury is a fun, distinctive B-action film that transplants the Zatoichi blind swordsman concept into an American Vietnam War context, giving it genuine novelty points for that cross-cultural mashup. Rutger Hauer brings charisma to the role and elevates the material above its station. The cinematography is competent and serviceable for the genre. However, the plot is fairly thin and predictable — a straightforward rescue mission with little depth — and the ending resolves things without much impact or surprise. The acting outside of Hauer ranges from average to hammy, and the film never quite transcends its B-movie limitations despite its charming premise.
