Space Pirate Captain Harlock and his fearless crew face off against the space invaders who seek to conquer the planet Earth.
The 2013 CGI reimagining of Leiji Matsumoto's classic is visually spectacular — Shinji Aramaki's direction delivers some of the most stunning cel-shaded 3D animation ever committed to screen, with breathtaking space vistas and ship designs that justify a top cinematography score. However, the plot is convoluted and struggles to balance its philosophical ambitions with coherent storytelling, undermining what could have been a powerful narrative. The ending in particular feels muddled and unsatisfying given the weight of themes it tries to carry. The voice acting is serviceable but not exceptional. Novelty is middling — it brings fresh visual craft to a beloved franchise but the reimagined story leans on familiar anime tropes and a somewhat predictable redemption arc.
