An itinerant farmer and his young son help a heart-of-gold saloon singer search for her estranged husband.
River of No Return is a visually striking CinemaScope Western with gorgeous location photography of the Canadian Rockies and Banff rapids that remains its strongest asset. Marilyn Monroe and Robert Mitchum bring star charisma, but the plot is formulaic frontier adventure with a predictable romance arc and thin characterization. The gold-rush river journey premise has been done before and is executed without great ingenuity. The ending resolves too neatly and conveniently, undercutting dramatic tension built earlier. Novelty is low — it follows well-worn Western conventions without a distinctive voice or conception beyond its impressive landscape photography.
