The Quartile Take

Neighbors is a broadly entertaining R-rated comedy but doesn't distinguish itself in many categories. The plot is thin and formulaic — a basic escalating prank war with little narrative depth. Acting is a relative bright spot, with Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne, and Zac Efron showing genuine comedic chemistry and commitment. Cinematography is functional at best, typical of mainstream studio comedies with no visual ambition. Novelty is low — the premise of uptight neighbors versus a party house has been done many times, and while the execution has some energy, it doesn't bring a distinctive voice or fresh angle. The ending is predictable and wraps up too neatly without much earned emotional resonance.
