Inspector Gadget 2 (2003)

Quartile rating: 4/10 · 1 rating

After capturing Claw, all the criminals have gone into hiding. Until Claw escapes! Gadget thinks he will get the case, but everyone else has other plans. A new version of the Gadget project is unveiled in the form of G2. Strict orders are given for Gadget to stay away from G2 and every crime scene, but Gadget feels he is needed more than anyone.

The Quartile Take

Inspector Gadget 2 is a direct-to-video sequel that recycles the basic premise of the first film with even less imagination. The plot is a formulaic retread — Claw escapes, Gadget is sidelined, a new partner arrives — with no meaningful narrative development. Acting is broadly poor, with flat performances and over-the-top slapstick that fails to land. Cinematography is serviceable but cheap-looking, consistent with its direct-to-video budget. Novelty is very low: it borrows its concept from the cartoon, then borrows again from its own predecessor with little creative distinction. The ending resolves predictably with no surprise or emotional payoff.
