Beauty and the Beast (2014)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

Forced to face the cruel side of life, a devastated, bankrupt merchant chances upon the enchanted castle of a hideous creature, the mere sight of it chills the bone to the marrow. There, a fate worse than death awaits the poor father-of-six, who, after plucking a sweet-scented rose from the repulsive master's verdant garden, must do the impossible: permit his compassionate daughter, Belle, to take his place and pay for the sins of her parent. Now, an impenetrable mystery shrouds the haunted mansion, and, as repugnance gradually turns into affection, only true love could break the spell.

The Quartile Take

This 2014 French adaptation (directed by Christophe Gans) is visually sumptuous, with lavish production design and striking fantasy imagery that genuinely elevates the cinematography above most fairy-tale fare. The plot faithfully follows the classic tale with some added backstory for the Beast, which adds modest depth but also slows pacing. Acting is competent—Léa Seydoux and Vincent Cassel are capable leads, though the emotional resonance rarely reaches its potential. The ending feels rushed and undercooked, failing to fully capitalize on the emotional buildup. Novelty is middling: the French setting and visual style give it a distinct flavor compared to other adaptations, but the narrative bones are well-trodden.
