Four couples, all friends, descend on a tropical island resort. Though one husband and wife are there to work on their marriage, the others just want to enjoy some fun in the sun. They soon find, however, that paradise comes at a price: Participation in couples therapy sessions is mandatory. What started out as a cut-rate vacation turns into an examination of the common problems many face.
Couples Retreat is a broadly formulaic romantic comedy that squanders a capable ensemble cast (Vince Vaughn, Jason Bateman, Jon Favreau, Kristen Bell) on a thin, predictable script. The tropical Bora Bora setting provides attractive cinematography but the plot mechanics—four couples discover relationship truths through mandatory therapy—are telegraphed from the opening minutes. The humor relies heavily on crude gags and improv-lite riffing rather than sharp writing, and the resolution tidily fixes every couple's issues in an unconvincing finale. Novelty is low as the film blends vacation comedy tropes with therapy-session clichés without adding any distinctive voice or fresh perspective.
