Zombieland (2009)

Quartile rating: 7.5/10 · 1 rating

Columbus has made a habit of running from what scares him. Tallahassee doesn't have fears. If he did, he'd kick their ever-living ass. In a world overrun by zombies, these two are perfectly evolved survivors. But now, they're about to stare down the most terrifying prospect of all: each other.

The Quartile Take

Zombieland is a distinctly voiced, self-aware zom-com that carved out its own irreverent niche with its rulebook gimmick, sardonic narration, and gonzo humor — earning strong Novelty marks for its singular tone even within an established genre. The acting is solid and charming, with Woody Harrelson a particular standout, but the ensemble isn't asked to do much dramatically. Cinematography is competent and energetic with some fun stylized slow-motion gore but nothing visually ambitious. The plot is thin and episodic by design — a road movie skeleton more than a structured narrative — which keeps it from ranking higher. The ending deflates somewhat, with the amusement park climax feeling underwhelming and convenience-driven compared to the fun of getting there, hence a below-average Ending score.
