The Blue Umbrella (2013)

Quartile rating: 7.5/10 · 1 rating

It is just another evening commute until the rain starts to fall, and the city comes alive to the sound of dripping rain pipes, whistling awnings and gurgling gutters.

The Quartile Take

This Pixar short is a technical marvel — its photorealistic 3D animation of a rain-soaked city is genuinely exceptional, blending hyperreal backgrounds with charmingly simple character faces on everyday objects. The selective coloring and anthropomorphic cityscape give it strong visual identity. However, the plot is minimal even by short-film standards: two umbrellas meet, are separated, reunite. There's no real acting to judge beyond visual expression. The concept of a love story among inanimate objects is charming but not wholly unprecedented, keeping Novelty solid but not outstanding. The ending is warm and satisfying but predictable.
