Jack is born with his heart frozen solid on the coldest day in history. A wise midwife saves him by replacing it with a cuckoo clock. Now Jack must abide by three rules to keep his mechanical heart safe: never touch the clock's hands, master his anger, and never fall in love. He tries his best, but when he meets a girl named Acacia he falls in love, threatening the delicate balance of his artificial heart.
Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart is a visually sumptuous French animated fantasy with a genuinely singular aesthetic — gothic, steampunk, and deeply romantic in equal measure. The animation and art direction are striking and distinctive, drawing on the source novel and album by Mathias Malzieu with a dreamlike, handcrafted quality that sets it apart from mainstream animation. The premise is inventively melancholic and the world-building feels truly original. However, the plot, while charming, is somewhat thin and episodic, relying heavily on atmosphere over narrative substance. The voice performances are adequate but not especially memorable, lacking the depth to fully sell the emotional stakes. The ending, while tonally consistent with the film's bittersweet register, feels a touch rushed and may not resonate as deeply as intended. Novelty and visual craft are its strongest suits; character and storytelling depth hold it back from greatness.
