Belle and Sebastian is set high in the snowy Alps during the Second World War. The resourceful Sebastian is a lonely boy who tames and befriends a giant, wild mountain dog, Belle – even though the villagers believe her to be ‘the beast’ that has been killing their sheep.
Belle and Sebastian is a visually stunning Alpine adventure with breathtaking mountain cinematography that elevates the material considerably. The plot follows a familiar boy-and-dog bond structure enriched by a WWII backdrop and refugee storyline, giving it more emotional weight than a typical children's adventure but remaining fairly predictable. Acting from the young lead is charming and naturalistic, though performances are generally modest in range. The film doesn't break new ground — the source material is classic French television, and the adaptation plays it safely — but the landscape photography and production design are genuinely impressive. The ending is emotionally satisfying if somewhat conventional for the genre.
