Sharknado (2013)

Quartile rating: 4/10 · 1 rating

A freak hurricane hits Los Angeles, causing man-eating sharks to be scooped up in tornadoes and flooding the city with shark-infested seawater. Surfer and bar-owner Fin sets out with his friends Baz and Nova to rescue his estranged wife April and teenage daughter Claudia.

The Quartile Take

Sharknado is gleefully trashy B-movie schlock with a deliberately absurd premise that earned it cult status. The plot is paper-thin and nonsensical by design, the acting ranges from wooden to campy, and the cinematography is cheap TV-movie quality throughout. However, its novelty score gets a bump for how memorably it leaned into its own ridiculousness — the chainsaw-through-a-shark climax became iconic. It's not distinctive for craft but for sheer audacity of concept, which is genuinely singular in pop culture terms. The ending is memorable but no more competent than the rest of the film.
