A lonely boy befriends a stray dog who has a natural talent for basketball and together they experience the highs and lows of life as their friendship remains solid through a series of escapades.
Air Bud is a charming but formulaic family film. The plot follows a predictable boy-and-dog friendship arc with standard underdog sports beats and little surprise. Acting is serviceable but unremarkable across the board. Cinematography is functional TV-movie level work. The novelty of a basketball-playing golden retriever gives it a genuinely distinctive hook that sets it apart from generic family fare, earning it a modest bump. The ending resolves everything tidily but without much emotional payoff beyond formula.
