86-year-old Irving Zisman is on a journey across America with the most unlikely companion: his 8 year-old grandson, Billy.
Bad Grandpa blends hidden-camera pranks with a loose narrative framework, giving it a slight edge in novelty over standard Jackass fare by committing to a story structure. Johnny Knoxville's Irving Zisman character is entertaining and his commitment to the role earns above-average marks for performance. However, the plot is thin and largely serves as connective tissue between gags, the cinematography is functional hidden-cam work with no artistic ambition, and the ending wraps up predictably without much emotional or comedic payoff. A solid entry for fans of the franchise but limited in broader cinematic ambition.
