Famous and wealthy funnyman George Simmons doesn't give much thought to how he treats people until a doctor delivers stunning health news, forcing George to reevaluate his priorities with a little help from aspiring stand-up comic Ira.
Funny People features strong performances from Sandler and Rogen, with Sandler in particular delivering some of his most genuinely dramatic work. The plot has interesting ideas about mortality and regret but runs significantly overlong, losing momentum in its bloated third act. The cinematography is functional but unremarkable for an Apatow production. The premise of a dying comedian reassessing his life has some novelty in the way it blends genuine pathos with comedy-world authenticity, but it doesn't fully distinguish itself conceptually. The ending is unsatisfying and anticlimactic, failing to deliver emotional payoff after such a lengthy runtime.
