John is a mild-mannered banker who has never been lucky in love. Fed up with waiting for the right girl to come along, John takes a chance on a Russian mail-order bride arranged via the Internet, where he is introduced to Nadia. John's fondness for Nadia grows... until the sudden arrival of Nadia's gregarious cousins makes John realize that he's in over his head.

The Quartile Take

Birthday Girl is a modestly engaging thriller-comedy that benefits from Nicole Kidman's committed performance as Nadia and some genuine chemistry, but the plot is fairly formulaic once the Russian criminals arrive and devolves into predictable heist-thriller territory. The cinematography is unremarkable and serviceable at best. The ending feels rushed and unsatisfying, failing to capitalize on the tonal ambiguity the film occasionally achieves. The mail-order bride premise gives it a mildly distinctive setup, but the execution leans heavily on genre conventions.
