With the help of a talking freeway billboard, a "wacky weatherman" tries to win the heart of an English newspaper reporter, who is struggling to make sense of the strange world of early-90s Los Angeles.
L.A. Story is a genuinely singular romantic comedy — Steve Martin's love letter to Los Angeles is steeped in surrealist whimsy (a sentient freeway sign as oracle) and satirical wit that sets it apart from the genre pack. Its novelty is its strongest suit: the blend of magical realism, Shakespeare homage, and sharp LA culture skewering is unmistakably its own voice. The plot is charming but lightweight, following a fairly familiar romantic arc beneath the fantastical trappings. Acting is warm and likable — Martin and Sara (Victoria Tennant) are appealing if not electrifying — with Richard E. Grant stealing scenes. Cinematography captures LA's sun-drenched sprawl with some lovely passages but without particular visual ambition. The ending is sweet and satisfying without being especially surprising or resonant.
