Talented but unproven stock car driver Cole Trickle gets a break and with the guidance of veteran Harry Hogge turns heads on the track. The young hotshot develops a rivalry with a fellow racer that threatens his career when the two smash their cars. But with the help of his doctor, Cole just might overcome his injuries-- and his fear.
Days of Thunder is a slick but formulaic NASCAR-themed action drama that closely mirrors the Top Gun formula (underdog hotshot, mentor figure, romance with professional woman, rivalry, redemption arc). The plot hits every expected beat without surprise, and the ending is predictable. Tom Cruise and Robert Duvall bring genuine charisma and craft to their roles, elevating what is otherwise a paint-by-numbers sports movie. The racing cinematography captures speed and danger effectively, though it lacks the distinctive visual personality of truly memorable action films. Novelty suffers most — it's essentially Top Gun on wheels, recycling the same story structure with a different sport, making it feel derivative despite its production polish.
