Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers (2004)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

In Disney's take on the Alexander Dumas tale, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy want nothing more than to perform brave deeds on behalf of their queen (Minnie Mouse), but they're stymied by the head Musketeer, Pete. Pete secretly wants to get rid of the queen, so he appoints Mickey and his bumbling friends as guardians to Minnie, thinking such a maneuver will ensure his scheme's success. The score features songs based on familiar classical melodies.

The Quartile Take

A lighthearted but fairly formulaic Disney direct-to-video romp that maps classic characters onto a well-worn Dumas framework without much narrative surprise. The voice performances are charming and true to the characters, and the classical-melody-based songs add a fun musical dimension. Visually it's competent but unremarkable for its era. The ending is safe and predictable, wrapping up exactly as expected. Novelty suffers because this is essentially a character-costume-swap on a very familiar story, a common Disney formula, though the classic-music arrangements give it a modest twist.
