A documentary film about Stanislav Petrov, a former lieutenant colonel of the Soviet Air Defence Forces.
This documentary tells one of the most extraordinary and underappreciated stories of the Cold War — the night Stanislav Petrov single-handedly prevented a nuclear catastrophe. The plot is inherently gripping and carries immense historical weight, earning a top mark. Novelty is high because the subject is genuinely singular and largely unknown to mainstream audiences, making the film feel revelatory. The cinematography is functional documentary fare with talking heads and archival footage, nothing particularly distinguished. The dramatic recreations and celebrity cameos (Kevin Costner, Robert De Niro) feel awkward and tonally mismatched, pulling the acting score down. The ending, which ties Petrov's personal recognition with bittersweet humanity, is moving but not fully realized.
