Bears (2014)

Quartile rating: 7.5/10 · 1 rating

Filmmakers Alastair Fothergill and Keith Scholey chronicle a year in the lives of an Alaskan brown bear named Sky and her cubs, Scout and Amber. Their saga begins as the bears emerge from hibernation at the end of winter. As time passes, the bear family must work together to find food and stay safe from other predators, especially other bears. Although their world is exciting, it is also risky, and the cubs' survival hinges on family togetherness.

The Quartile Take

Bears is a solid entry in the Disneynature documentary series, following a mother grizzly and her cubs through an Alaskan year. The cinematography is genuinely exceptional — patient, intimate wildlife footage with stunning Alaskan landscapes that rivals the best nature filmmaking. The narrative arc is competent but formulaic for the genre, hitting familiar beats of survival, seasonal struggle, and family bonds. Acting is not applicable in a traditional sense, though the narration (John C. Reilly) leans heavily anthropomorphic and occasionally undercuts the footage. Novelty is limited — this follows the well-worn Disneynature template closely, and bear family documentaries are well-trodden territory. The ending is satisfying in a conventional nature-doc way without being especially memorable.
